How Much Luggage Can You Take on a Private Jet?
On a scheduled flight your baggage allowance is printed on the ticket. On a charter, it depends on the aircraft, the distance, the number of passengers and even the weather. The good news: most groups travel with far more than an airline allows. The key is to tell the operator what you are bringing.
Why weight matters more than seats
Every aircraft has a maximum take-off weight. Passengers, baggage and fuel all share it. On a longer flight the aircraft needs more fuel, which leaves less capacity for people and bags. That is why a nine-seat jet may carry nine passengers with light bags on a short hop, but fewer passengers or less luggage on a long one.
A rough guide by aircraft class
- Light helicopters (Bell 407, Airbus H130): very limited space; soft bags only, and weights are checked carefully.
- Turboprops (Pilatus PC-12, King Air 350i): surprisingly generous, with a large cabin and baggage area for their size.
- Light jets (Citation CJ2+, XLS+, Premier 1A): a couple of medium suitcases per passenger on a typical domestic sector.
- Midsize and heavy jets (Hawker 800XP, Falcon 2000, Legacy 650): room for large cases, golf bags and more.
- Ultra long range jets (Global 6000, G550): the most space, and often baggage accessible in flight.
Items to mention in advance
- Golf bags, skis or sports equipment.
- Wedding trunks, décor or outfits on hangers.
- Medical equipment or mobility aids.
- Musical instruments or camera kit.
Why helicopters are strictest
Helicopters carry much less weight than jets, and their performance drops further on hot days and at altitude. On pilgrimage routes in the hills, operators may record each passenger's weight and set a strict baggage limit per person. Keep essentials in a small soft bag and leave the rest at the hotel.
Dangerous goods
Some items are restricted on any aircraft: flammable liquids, gas cylinders, some batteries and aerosols in quantity. Spare lithium batteries for cameras and laptops usually travel in the cabin, not in the hold. If you are unsure, list the item when you request a quote, and the operator will advise.
Weddings, events and relocations
For weddings, trunks of outfits and gifts add up quickly. For relocations, a charter can carry more personal items than an airline, but furniture and bulk cargo belong on a truck. When in doubt, send a list; it takes minutes and prevents problems on the apron.
At the airport
Bags are loaded by the crew or handler. There is no conveyor and no baggage claim queue at the other end, which is one of the quiet pleasures of flying private.
Packing tips
- Prefer soft bags for helicopters and light aircraft; they fit odd spaces.
- Share an honest estimate of the number and size of bags.
- Keep essentials and medicines in a small cabin bag.
- For big events, consider sending bulky items ahead by road.
