Kedarnath by Helicopter: IRCTC Shuttle Tickets or a Private Charter?
Kedarnath sits high in the Garhwal Himalaya, and for many pilgrims a helicopter turns a long, hard trek into a short flight. There are two separate ways to do it, and they suit different families.
Option 1: shuttle tickets through IRCTC HeliYatra
Seats on the regular shuttle flights from helipads in the Kedarnath valley are sold online through IRCTC's official HeliYatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in) during the yatra season. Tickets are per seat, sold in advance, and in high demand, and they usually require the pilgrim's yatra registration. Always use the official portal. Fake booking sites for Kedarnath helicopters are a well-known scam.
The shuttle suits individuals and small families who can travel on the operator's fixed short hop between the valley helipads and Kedarnath, and who can reach the valley by road.
Option 2: a private helicopter charter
A private charter is a whole helicopter for your group, with timings built around you. It is typically used for:
- Char Dham or Do Dham circuits in a few days, rather than one shrine.
- Elderly or less mobile family members who need a simpler journey.
- Groups starting from Dehradun, where fixed-wing flights from the metros arrive. Delhi to Dehradun is about 208 km (roughly 35 min by jet).
Private helicopter access to shrine helipads is subject to the permissions and slot arrangements that apply in that season, which the operator handles.
Plan around the season and weather
- The shrine opens in spring and closes before winter, on dates announced each year.
- Monsoon months bring cloud and rain that frequently pause flying.
- Mornings are generally the most reliable time to fly in the hills.
Weight and baggage
High-altitude helicopter flying has strict weight limits, so expect passenger weights to be recorded and baggage to be minimal. Plan to keep main luggage at your base hotel.
Avoiding booking scams
Every season, pilgrims lose money to websites and social media pages that falsely claim to sell Kedarnath helicopter tickets. Shuttle tickets are sold through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal. For private charter, deal with a company that can name the operator flying you and give you a written quotation before you pay.
Registration and health
Pilgrims to the Char Dham shrines are generally required to complete the Uttarakhand yatra registration, and the requirement is enforced at various points. Kedarnath is at high altitude. Elderly pilgrims and anyone with heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor before travel, even when flying, since walking at the shrine is unavoidable.
Building a family itinerary
- Fly from your city to Dehradun on a fixed-wing charter or scheduled flight.
- Stay overnight near the helicopter base to be ready for a morning departure.
- Complete the darshan and return the same day when weather allows, keeping a spare day in case flights are paused.
A spare day is the single best piece of advice for any Himalayan helicopter trip.
Which is right for you?
If you need a single round trip and can get to the valley yourself, the IRCTC shuttle is the most economical route. If you are travelling as a family group, covering several dhams, or need comfort and flexibility, a private charter is worth pricing. Read our Char Dham by helicopter guide, visit the Dharm Yatra page, or request a quote.
Share your route and dates, and a flight advisor will respond the same day with real availability and pricing.
